The island of Rhodes (Rodos) belongs to the South Aegean Region. It is the largest island in the Dodecanese and the fourth in Greece after Crete, Evia and Lesvos (Lesbos). It is located between Karpathos and Kos.
It has a long history, a rich natural environment, beautiful beaches and modern tourist facilities, elements that have for decades made it a one of the most popular tourist destinations both nationally and worldwide.
The island of Rhodes is oblong and has the shape of a spear edge. Tsambika, Afandou, Ladiko, Faliraki are only few of the lovely resorts that Rhodes proposes, welcoming a great amount of tourists every summer, attracted by the high level of sunshine and the amazing sandy beaches.
The capital lies within the walls of a very well preserved Venetian castle, built by the Knights of Saint John. It is world known for its colossus. In 1988 the Medieval City of Rhodes was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in acknowledgment of the uniqueness of the trans-cultural architectural wealth it is known to represent. Moreover, the City of Rhodes has been a member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities, since the Organization was founded in 1993, under the auspices of UNESCO.
In Rhodes every corner of the town, every stone on the island hides a small part of its 2400-year history. The ancient city of Rhodes, the construction of which began in 408-407 BC, was designed using the grid system of city planning devised by the greatest city planner of antiquity, Hippodamus of Miletus. It was considered one of the most beautiful and bestorganized cities of antiquity, of which we know the exact placing of streets, squares and buildings.
